Product Description:
Everyone knew Len Dreyer, a handyman for hire in the Park near Niniltna, Alaska, but no one knew anything else about him. Even Kate Shugak, who was planning to ask him to help build a small second cabin on her property, knew him. But she, the Park's unofficial P.I., seems to have known less about him than anyone.
When Len Dreyer's body is discovered, frozen solid, in the path of a receding glacier with a hole from a shotgun blast in his chest, no one even noticed that he was missing for months. Alaska State Trooper Jim Chopin asks Kate to help him dig into Dreyer's background, in the hope of finding some motive for his murder. She takes the case, mindful of the need for gainful employment as she copes with her responsibility for Johnny, the teenage boy in her care and a constant reminder of his father, her dead lover. Little does she imagine that by trying to provide for him she just might put him right in the path of danger.

Dana Stabenow is a mystery writer who spins a great story line along with the mystery. She keeps a running comentary on the various characters, and if like me you recieve the books out of order you can still follow the story line. Love Alaska, and this author

Because I'm planning to visit Alaska this summer, I've been immersing myself in tour guides, literature, and videos about our northernmost state. This is the very first book written by Alaskan native Dana Stabenow that I have read. I had hoped to pick up on some local colour in the pages of this book. The colour I picked up on was mostly blue as I found myself learning more about Kate Shugak's love life than about Alaskan landscapes.
While I admit to having a narrow view on the author's writing style, this being the only book of hers I have read, I found her focus to be much more on her characters than on setting. Place seemed to be only incidental to the story, a glacier nothing more than a convenient place to stash a corpse. Alas for Alaska, Ms. Stabenow is no Tony Hillerman.
Frankly, I prefer fiction in which setting plays a more prominent role. I was also disappointed in the ending. I will probably not be reading any more books in this series.

Top-notch author and another winning story. Alaska is featured and described with accuracy and affection. Just one of the many stories in this land of mystery and challenges.
