Editor's Notes and Comments:
Product Description:
Along the banks of the Ohio River, the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, has been the home of quiet pleasures and safety for Adrienne Reynolds and her fourteen-year-old daughter Skye since the death of Adrienne's husband four years ago. Their sense of safety is shattered, however, when Adrienne and Skye find the body of one of Adrienne's best friends, Julianna, in a once-elegant, now abandoned hotel named La Belle Riviere. La Belle has a long history of misfortunes, but Julianna's murder is the most gruesome.
Evidence indicates Julianna that had a secret lover whom she met regularly in the hotel, and who could have been with her in her final moments. The only person who knows this lover's identity is the hotel caretaker, Claude Duncan. But Claude is quickly silenced-drugged and burned to death in his small cottage on the grounds of La Belle the night after Julianna's death. One by one, people close to Adrienne are brutally murdered, and it looks as though she and Skye are the subsequent targets of a fierce killer with a shocking secret.

After the sudden death of her husband, Adrienne Reynolds returned with her fourteen year old daughter Skye to her hometown of Point Pleasant, West Virginia (home of the book's author, not-so-incidentally) to find a little peace and serenity in the familiar. Also back in the nest is the beautiful, restless Julianna Brent, Adrienne's best friend, who had come back home to recover from her fast-paced model's life of drugs and partying. The novel opens with Julianna's vicious murder, which takes place in the town's old, abandoned grand hotel - La Belle Riviere, better known to the locals as "The Belle" - now condemned and slated for demolition, and it's Adrienne and her daughter who find Julianna's body. From there, things become more and more dangerous for Adrienne and Skye, as the killer racks up a few more murders and sends a few clear warnings to Adrienne about sticking her nose in too deeply.
Carlene Thompson is on her way to becoming the new Mary Higgins Clark, although her writing will need to be polished a little further before assuming that mantle. I've been reading her books for a few years now, and I can't help but get the impression that because she knows she has a younger audience - her books are adult mainstream, but a lot of what seem like teenagers and young women write reviews on Amazon - she's catering a little more to that crowd, and dumbing down the quality of the writing just a tiny bit. I also don't care for the "romantic suspense" genre too much, where the heroine always ends up with the love of her life, because it's just so trite and formulaic. Those are the two downsides to Thompson's novels, although neither is so glaring that I don't enjoy the stories. The ending of this one was great as far as the identity of the killer - I suspected it but I'm not one of those who gets upset if I guess who it is; I mean, you're supposed to guess - but the reason this person was the killer fell totally flat. I thought it was going to be one thing, and it turned out to be something completely different, and what I thought would have been better (lol). It was a decent read, though, and if you like Mary Higgins Clark and the like, you'll enjoy Thompson's work.

I love a well-written thriller. Unfortunately, many thrillers are not well-written. They tend to have two-dimensional characters who are exceptionally lacking and common sense and the writing is often riddled with grammatical errors. Often they are thinly disguised romance novels. "Share No Secrets" is a really good book: the plot is very suspenseful, the characters are well fleshed-out, and the reader really feels they are in the small town of Point Pleasant, WV. Three girls grew up together in Point Pleasant, Adrienne, Julianna, and Kit. They are grown up now: Adrienne is an widowed artist with a fourteen-year-old daughter, Julianna is a burnt-out supermodel, and Kit owns a successful restaurant. Kit's mother owns a historic grand hotel with a tragic history. Kit, who loves the hotel, has commissioned Adrienne to make a painting of the hotel before her mother has the hotel demolished because of her superstitious fear of the deaths that have occurred there over the years. But Julianna has been using the empty hotel to meet a married lover. Her dead body is discovered by Adrienne in a bed in her favorite room, surrounded by scented candles. Now Adrienne, who knows too much, is being stalked by Julianna's killer. There are many suspects in the small town. Could it be Julianna's ex-husband, her sister, a jilted lover, or even her old friend Kit? "Share No Secrets" is the very first book I have read by Carlene Thompson. I will definitely be reading more.

I've thoroughly enjoyed all of the rest of Carlene Thompson's books, so I was really looking forward to this one. However, from the very beginning, I found myself progressively more and more disappointed. The writing is sub-standard, full of errors and contradictions when some plot line facts weren't kept straight. The scene in which the heroine discovers her old friend's dead body is truly flat, and her demeanor after the fact is unbelievable. She truly seems to have been unaffected by what she's seen, rather than someone trying to put on a brave face. The character of the daughter seems very one-dimensional and without merit.
I've always bought Carlene Thompson's books as soon as they were released, without even looking to see what they were about. When the subsequent one comes out, I'll definitely take a look at a few pages to see if it's worth reading.
Disappointing.

Share No Secrets is a fast paced suspense that is centered around the town's hotel, La Belle Riviere. Some of the locals believe that the hotel is haunted but, can that explain all the mysterious events that seem to surround the town's grandest hotel?
After famous model, Julianna Brent's body is found by her best friend Adrienne Reynolds and Adrienne's daughter in the closed down hotel, it seems that danger isn't far behind. Adrienne is still reeling from the horrifying discovery of finding her best friend murdered when she figures out her own life may be in danger and learns that everyone has a secret. But is it too late to protect herself and keep her daughter, Skye, safe.
Carlene Thompson has created an action filled read with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end! This story is highly detailed with an array of in depth characters that are smart, funny and engaging. I felt that Ms. Thompson truly captured the feel of small town life and made you care about the characters she created.
Share No Secrets is one of the best stories this reader has picked up in a long time and I highly recommend it for anyone who's looking for a book that they can't put down.
