This novel was absolutely fabulous. It is not a novel for those that want a quick read. I am usually a very quick read and found myself taking a lot of time to comprehend the many facets of the book. I have been to Egypt and southern Africa and my travels helped me as Mr. Smith is very accurate. I totally recommend this novel. I believe this series is his best and hope he provides us another one...

River God and the Seventh Scroll are among my all time favorite reads. After 3 hours of torture I consigned this literary sham to the trash. I have thrown out possibly a total of 5 books in my entire life, deeming them unworthy to share despite my own issues with them. This may have been the worst of the lot.

If I could give this zeros stars I would. That is how much I loathed this novel with its uninteresting characters, confusing plot and terrible dialogue. Really, find something else to read.

I have read a couple of Wilbur Smith's earlier books and found them Ok-- but this one? The Quest is a mess and not worth reading. If anything this is some kind of very strange historical science erotic fiction fantasy or something. It is one of the worst books I have ever read and I had to force myself to read it. It begins well and just goes downhill from there to the very last page. Some of it makes so little sense that you will go back and re-read the page just to be sure it was that bad or nonsensecial.
This has not been very well thought out by the author. There are more holes in it than swiss cheese and some of it is so poorly conceived and written that I can't beleive any editor ever approved of the final draft.
Let us take a quick look at this inane "historical novel". We have 156 year old reknowned Egyptian wise man who was castrated who goes on a mission for the Pharaoh to find why the Nile River is drying up the past 7 years...a nice little 3500 mile jaunt to Lake Albert and Lake Victoria the source of the Nile, White Nile. And since the Nile has nearly dried-up it is a land journey. What happened to the Blue Nile? That wasn't blocked by the wicked 2000 year old witch. So much makes so little sense at all and I'm not talking about the 2000 year old witch who does a cameo appearance.
Just when you think the story can't get worse you begin to realize that this 156 year old mis-guided "wiseman" is falling in love with a pre-pubescent 12 year old girl who he thinks is the reincarnation of a woman who he loved 70 years earlier and was an Egyptian Queen. Back then things did not work out so well and his being castrated did not help him.
But, no problem this time around because...the medical technology of the wicked witch has for some reason come to his rescue and given him a penis??? This all has to do with getting young girls pregnant by the soldiers and harvesting the babies and feeding the mothers to the pet crocodiles and making a paste of the babies...enuf. Imagine all this about 3500 years ago? And all this a couple days journey from the western shores of Lake Victoria in the heart of Africa? I don't know what Wilbur is smoking?
Just when you think it can't get any worse-- Old Taita just happens to find the Font of Youth and he is suddenly a very young man of maybe 25 and very handsome. This really works out well for him when he meets back up with the 12 year old girl who he loves. Shortly later she has her very first menstrual period and soon they finally have intercourse.
I don't think I have ever read anything so bad in my life. It is difficult to believe anyone could write this tripe and nearly astounding that the publisher didn't ask for some major changes before going to press. This is one to forget.
I am sure Wilbur can do better than this. I hope so. I did get a few good laughs and I didn't even mention the terrifying giant frogs with razor teeth who devour men and horses. Guess you'll have to read the book for those goodies.
