Product Description:
Inch by inch, day by day, Scott Carey is getting smaller. Once an unremarkable husband and father, Scott finds himself shrinking with no end in sight. His wife and family turn into unreachable giants, the family cat becomes a predatory menace, and Scott must struggle to survive in a world that seems to be growing ever larger and more perilous--until he faces the ultimate limits of fear and existence.
Amazon.com Review:
Some people will remember The Incredible Shrinking Man as a movie with great special effects and a surprisingly good script, given the ridiculous title. Matheson's classic novella is the reason for that. As Scott Carey -- husband, father, and all-around decent guy -- mysteriously shrinks, he faces unimagined horrors at every step, up to the story's surprising resolution. It's packaged here with a number of Matheson's other classic stories, including 'Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,' which became a popular Twilight Zone episode, and 'Duel,' which was turned into a movie by a very young Steven Spielberg.

"The Incredible Shrinking Man" by Richard Matheson is a classic novel by a pro author that is nothing short of an exhilerating and thought-provoking tale that should be enjoyed by anyone who reads.
Scott Carey is a thirty-something, married man with a young daughter and the rarest of all afflictions: he shrinks 1/7 of an inch every day. This novel tells the story from two points-of-view: one is Scott in his seemingly last week on earth when he in confined to the cellar battling a grey widow for survival (for what?) and climbing mountainous lawn-furniture for a bit of cracker crumbs so he can survive another day. This side of the story raises many questions: "Why is he even trying to kill the spider?", "Does he die or simply disappear?". The other is Scott battling this "illness" in everyday life. As he shrinks so does his patience and his frustration. He snaps at his wife at every comment, he can't pay bills any more and is mentally unprepared (who is?) for what is happening to his boby and his mind.
This novel is a must. This really details the physical and mental deteriation of a normal man in abnormal circumstances.
Included in this novel are a number of (very) short stories including the Twilight Zone classic "Nightmare at 20,000 feet" and a variety of others. Some very good, a couple Ok, and a couple not worth reading.
This book is worth the $7 you'll pay for it and should really only take a quiet afternoon to read. Please enjoy.

At very first I thought the dual time line was a bad idea - Scott's fate unfolding vs his miniature life in the cellar. But now I've finished the book I realise the way the story was told was perfect. Another reviewer says the character spends his time being miserable, but who wouldn't be? Shrinking a little bit each day, losing your wife, losing your daughter, your dignity, everything?
The last three or four chapters are the best I've read in horror - superbly written. The last chapter is excellent. but I supsect Matheson got the idea from a sci-fi short story from the thirties. I can't remember the name, but it was in a compliation where Isaac Asimov gathered together his favourite stories from his youth.
This book is worth reading. Buy it. Read it. Lend it to your friends.

First off, I LOVED Richard Mathesons I AM LEGEND, it was a wonderful story and i could connect with the character on every level. The Incredible Shrinking Man on the other hand is probably one of the worst books i ever read. This whole book could have probably been condensed into two chapters. If you enjoy reading about nothing but a character whine and pout and be a jerk to his wife than maby you will enjoy this book. Practically half the chapters have nothing to do with the story at all and can be skipped entirely and you hardly will know the difference. It was just a predictable and boring read. The only thing that kept me reading was i had to know what happened in the end, and even that was disappointing. Sorry Matheson, but this one was just plain bad.

I'm reading the book now, I'm looking forward to seeing if its any different than the movie which I saw as a boy. The unexpected surprise is that the novels came with about a dozen or so different stories like "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" and "Duel" which was turned into a movie by Steven Spielberg.

For those newly interested in Richard Matheson because of the new I am Legend movie, you will not be dissapointed with this book. One of his great novels along with I am Legend, Hell House, and A Stir of Echoes are all must reads.
