This story is set in Appalachia with a simple theme of a married couple, their desire for a child and the tragic events that follow. Nothing new there you may think, but don't be fooled. The dialect is spot on, the prose are beautiful and haunting, but the best part of this book is the way Ron Rash presents it to us.
I love the way he's given us 5 narrators to tell the story, each telling their view of the events without making the storyline repetitive or boring. I picked up this book after reading Rash's "Serena", another gem of a book that I highly recommended.

It was a bit of a slow start for me, but when it opened up it was like a floodgate - a story of passion & tragedy, mysterious & eerie, a book that I didn't want to put down. I hope this is the very first of many wonderful novels by Ron Rash.

This is the second book by Ron Rash that I have read and I have to say he is becoming one of my favorite authors extremely fast. This book not only has amazing character development, but it it an amazing story as well. The scenery in itself makes you wish you could have lived in that time and place. This is a must read and I recommend it to anyone who has the chance.

I suppose "Southern Gothic" could describe this wonderful novel (I have seen this term used) but it is so much more.....as are all of Rash's works. He is a great writer who tells stories with a minimum of carefully chosen words. There is no excess verbiage, a lesson that many contemporary novelists could learn.
This story is a mystery, a romance, and a story of a big corporation changing lives and the landscape forever. It depicts the inner turmoil of the main characters without ever getting maudlin.
Highly recommended.

This book captures, in its entirety, the essence of the disappearance of the Jocassee River valley. Written in a very unique perspective form, the book offers detailed and poetic insights into the minds and hearts of the major characters. A very creative way to approach omniscience. Coupled with evocative imagery and mastery storytelling, this book is a must read for all those who love up-state South Carolina culture and history or just plain appalachian lore. Rash's best in my opinion.
