Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:

It begins with a single shot.

Devon Brady is a devoted veterinarian working in a makeshift hospital on a remote search and rescue mission. When a man arrives with his wounded grey Lab, Ned, she has no idea that she is about to be plunged into a whirlwind of terror and destruction.

Jude Marrock is out for revenge and has no choice but to involve Devon in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with an escalating body count. She doesn’t trust him one bit, but when the shots start flying and friends start falling, she finds herself with nowhere else to run. And there are innocent lives, both human and animal, at stake, including Ned and his mysterious pack. Is Jude her salvation or her damnation? Are the secrets he’s protecting worth killing for . . . or dying for?

With a lightning-fast pace, unforgettable characters, and gut-wrenching action, Dark Summer is compelling new terrain for this master storyteller.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Dammit, Dammit, Dammit
Her editor needs to reign her in. Her last two books have had at least one of her characters exclaiming "dammit" in almost every conversation! Didn't waste my time counting, but it was a ridiculous amount - I was saying a lot more than that every time I came across another one. Perhaps she thinks it's cute; it's not, it's "damn" annoying. I will not waste my time on another one of her books. Too many authors, too little time.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - OK thriller
Back in my college days (not that long ago, but longer than I'd like to think - roughly 15 years ago) I had a roommate who loved Iris Johansen. I read several of her books and always just thought they were OK.

15 years hasn't much changed my opinion. It was well enough written for a romantic thriller of its genre, but I hated the male protagonist - just too he-man and "rough" for my style. I like a guy who thinks.

To be fair to the genre, I love other romantic thriller writers, so it's not a question of me finding them too unrealistic, romantic, etc. It's just the way the characters are developed that turns me off a little.

If I remember correctly, this is typical for the author, though, so if you are a fan, you'll probably like this just fine. And it's not the worst book I've ever read, but I just wasn't caring too much about the characters.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Tense, suspenseful paranormal adventure/romance
Devon Brady is a veterinarian with a true love of animals. She even takes her greyhound, Gracie, with her on rescue missions to disaster areas. She has Gracie with her in San Marino where a volcanic eruption has cause an huge earthquake. They are exhausted from searching for anyone alive beneath the rubble as they come back to the tents and her fellow vet, Nick, who retired from full time practice a few years before.

Jude Marrock is a former SEAL who also has Ned, a grey labrador, who helps him in rescues. He is at San Marino but not authorized but he and his dog want to help. Ned finds a dead body and then seems to sniff out someone alive but is shot by an enemy of Jude's. Jude takes the dog to the rescue operation vet which, of course, is Devon. Devon is astonished at how well behaved and intelligent Ned is. Jude tells Devon where Ned may have found someone still alive and she sends people and goes herself and in fact finds a young toddler unconscious but alive. Jude leaves Ned with a note for Devon to please take Ned with her back to Denver. He goes off after the shooter.

The suspense and mystery of who the "good" and "bad" guys really are and how the dogs and Jude figure in was very well done. I thought, however, that the romance between Devon and Jude was rather weak. She never even calls him by his very first name!

Not up to Ms. Johansen's usual standards but a good read for the mystery and if you like paranormal stories.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - A Waste of Time and Money
What has happened to Iris? I started reading the Eve Duncan series several years back and began to love this author. Then, every book started sounding alike: a bitter and dangerous ex-Seal or Ranger or Special Forces guy for whom previously sane and rational women fall for immediately. But this book is so contrived that it seems mechanical. Rapid fire but dull and contrived dialogue. A man who kills without compunction. A heroine whose life has been destroyed by the macho leading man, but who falls hopelessly in lust with him and follows him wherever he goes. How can a woman jusr give up everything for a very violent and mercurial man who has big demons? Sex, sex, sex.

The dogs are the most lovable characters in this book! And there is way too much violence. After reading about three of the beginning chapters, a few of the middle chapters, and the last chapter, I gave up.

With the cost of hardback books these days, publishers and authors should take care to create books that at least have some semblance of rhyme and reason. I've stopped reading Patricia Cornell, James Patterson, and a few others for this reason. Iris may be next.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - dark summer by iris johansen
definitely not one of johansen's better books- plot is odd and characters are very one dimensional - a disappointment for what could have been a great book with the premise!
