Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
A new Chief Inspector Wexford mystery from the author who Time magazine has called “the best mystery writer in the English-speaking world.”

When the truffle-hunting dog starts to dig furiously, his master’s very first reaction is delight at the size of the clump the dog has unearthed: at the going rate, this one truffle might be worth several hundred pounds. Then the dirt falls away to reveal not a precious mushroom but the bones and tendons of what is clearly a human hand.

In Not in the Flesh, Chief Inspector Wexford tries to piece together events that took place eleven years earlier, a time when someone was secretly interred in a secluded patch of English countryside. Now Wexford and his team will need to interrogate everyone who lives nearby to see if they can turn up a match for the dead man among the eighty-five people in this part of England who have disappeared over the past decade. Then, when a second body is discovered nearby, Wexford experiences a feeling that’s become a rarity for the veteran policeman: surprise.

As Wexford painstakingly moves to resolve these multiple mysteries, long-buried secrets are brought to daylight, and Ruth Rendell once again proves why she has been hailed as our greatest living mystery writer.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A tired Wexford
This is not the best Wexford novel by any means but a mediocre Rendell book is far better than most out there. Wexford seems tired and I wish Rendell would retire him and focus on her other novels which I much more entertaining. This one especially seems cluttered with characters and the story line is often confusing. A sub-plot about female mutilation is totally unrelated to the main story and I honestly don't see why it is included. I also find characters who recall what they were doing on a certain date over ten years ago to be irritating and this book is full of them. I'm ready for another Barbara Vine novel!

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - $15 is too much for a kindle book
I have all of Rendell's other books but I won't buy this one. $15 is too much for a Kindle book. They don't have to cover the cost of printing and shipping so I think the price shouldn't exceed $9.99. For $15 I want a hard copy book I can share with others. I hope others refuse to buy at this price point too so the publisher gets the message.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not Rendell's Best
I am a huge fan of Ruth Rendell having read every book and novela she has written. I was eagerly awaiting the release of this new Wexford novel. Although I enjoyed it for there is really no bad Rendell book, in my opinion, it is far from one of her best. That said, I would still buy it because even at her less than best, Rendell is still the best writer out there. In this one, Wexford investigates two old murders and there is a subplot about female circumcision that meanders along. There are no big surprises but a lot of interesting characters as is to be expected from this fine author. If you're a big fan as I am, you will likely get it anyway. The rest should pick up one of her other fine books, especially the early novels and short stories and those written under her pen name, Barbara Vine.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Classic Rendell
If you love Rendell's writing style--and who wouldn't-- you'll like this book. NOT IN THE FLESH is a bit more Agatha Christie-style than most, but she has created some loathsome characters in the "Wives Tredown" and an amoral neighbor who is less than forthcoming. You'll want to wring some necks, that's certain. Not memorable but that's not necessarily the point, is it?

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - She's still got it!
The thing I love about Ruth Rendell is that in addition to having a good who-dun-it, she also explores how British life is changing and what ordinary people think of that. She does that again in this one. I guess I'll concede that she sometimes allows characters to do this in a self-conscious way that might seem a "tad" dated. But her characters aren't supposed to be hip urbanites who wouldn't possibly use a term from the 90s. They're supposed to be small-town police officers who are generally well-meaning, but a bit befuddled by it all. And that comes through. I just get lost her in books and forget the events aren't real. She's wonderful.
