Product Description:
Frankie Machianno, a hard-working entrepreneur, passionate lover, part-time surf bum, and full-time dad, is a widely recognized pillar of his waterfront community. He is also a retired hit man. Once better known as Frankie Machine, he was a brutally efficient killer. Now someone from his past wants him dead, and after a botched endeavor on his life, Frankie sets out to find his potential killers. However, the list of suspects is longer than the California coastline. With the mob on his heels and the cops on his tail, Frankie hatches a plan to protect his family, save his life, and escape the mob forever. Then things get really complicated.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The GoodFellas of literature
I have ready many crime drama novels depicting life in the Mafia or organized crime and this is definitely my favorite. It is to Mario Puzo's The Godfather novel what Scorsese's GoodFellas is to Coppola's The Godfather the movie. It is a shining example of how easy it can be to be sucked into a life of crime while serving as the perfect tale of a man's redemption. Winslow's words come together like the frames of a movie more than they do like words on a page. Underrated is probably not the best word to describe this book because there are few who dislike it, however, it hasn't received the exposure it well deserves.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - What happened to Don Winslow?
The absolute very first rule of writing a thriller/mystery/crime novel is: GRRAB THE READER ON PAGE ONE! Welllll...I read about 50 pages of this book and gave up. NOTHING HAPPENS! I don't care how fast Frankie can get ready in the morning nor do I car how he makes coffee and his breakfast. I read and read, waiting but NOTHING HAPPENS! There are just too many good books out there so I gave up. Optioned for a movie????? I'm amazed.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Robert DeNiro is Frankie Machine!!!
Unfortunately, the movie adaptation by Robert DeNiro for The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow has been put on hold till 2010. Why? It could be anyone's guess as to what the actual holdup is. I know DeNiro has paid a couple of writers to do drafts of the script and has talked with more than one director about shooting the film. Like some of the other reviewers, I'm going to be very first in line to see this movie when it finally comes out at the theaters.

If ever there was a character written especially for DeNiro to play, it's the role of Frank Machianno (aka Frankie the Machine), a retired hit man for the San Diego mob who now owns a bait shop, fixes the drain under his ex-wife's sink, pampers his mistress, and loves his daughter enough to do whatever it takes to pay her way through medical school. Life couldn't be better for Frankie. He's sixty-three and still occasionally surfs with his old friends, the women in his life are fairly happy, so he's happy, his businesses are running good, then everything suddenly changes when he tries to do a favor for the son of a friend and is almost killed in the process with a wire garrote around the neck. Though Frankie doesn't know why a contract has unexpectedly been taken out on him, he's determined to stay alive long enough to find out. He quickly puts his life on hold and gets his women out of town to safety, then starts backtracking, tracing down the people who helped with the contract. He also has to stay one step ahead of the mob and its team of killers. Frankie used to be the best hit man the San Diego mob ever had. Now they're about to find out just how damn good he really is as he starts taking out their people left and right and works his way back to the source of the contract. Frankie knows that there's no turning back. It's either kill, or be killed, and he's a master craftsman at what he does.

As with The Dawn Patrol, Don Winslow does a truly excellent job of telling Frankie's story through flashbacks and with meticulous writing that creates an imagery of San Diego during the last forty years that stays with you long after the novel is finished. The character of Frankie Machianno is pure DeNiro through and through. You see him in Frankie's actions, his dialogue, the way he thinks, and the way he kills. This is a man with his own code of honor, refusing to be a rat, and always choosing to do what he thinks is right. This is certainly a character that you want to see more of, especially on the big screen.

Last, but not least, this is only the second book I've read by Don Winslow, but already he's proven to me what an exceptional writer he is, and I'm hungry to read more novels by him. Let me just give thanks to Amazon reviewer, Gary Griffiths, who recommended this author to me and for the fabulous book reviews that he does. Gary is a true lover of good books!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Can't say it any better.
Winslow is a new discovery for me. sure can't improve on other reviews but totally agree, a great book, great writing. trite but true - you won't want to put it down. (but movies are never as good as the book, so i won't be seeing it, i want to keep my own pictures and feelings.)

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Love Winslow
The very first Don Winslow I read was "The Power of the Dog" and I have since read it again. Then "California Fire and Life" and now "The Winter of Frankie Machine". This would make a wonderful film --- if they didn't change anything! This Frankie is someone I like --- loving, fair, honorable and SMART --- all this while removing bad guys. "But never civilians, only players" and you're pretty okay with his decisions. You know how you're not ready for some books to end? This was one of those and I'm almost finished. Now what?
