This wonderful book is an exciting, suspenseful, fun mixture of mystery, magic, action, adventure and humor. Skulduggery Pleasant is a detective who happens to be a skeleton, and his assistant is a talented, intelligent 12-year-old girl named Stephanie Edgley. Together they set out to solve the murder of Stephanie's uncle Gordon, who was working on the final chapter of his new book at the time of his sudden death. The conversations between Skulduggery and Stephanie are extremely funny, and will entertain grown-ups at least as much as they do kids. And the short story at the end of this edition, "The Lost Art of World Domination," is hilarious.

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy is a refreshing departure from the Harry Potter school of magic. Unlike the Potter books, where new and previously unmentioned magical abilities seem to appear whenever needed, the world of Skulduggery Pleasant is set firmly in a well-defined world. The magical abilities of the main character are limited and consistent, requiring him to solve problems and defeat his enemies within an established context, relying upon wit and skills rather than a newly revealed power. The characters introduced in this very first novel of what should be a successful series are delightfully original. The narrative combines action with humor, making this a perfect book for tweens and teens, and adults as well. This review is for the audio version of the book. Robert Degas, the reader, is well-chosen and the brief musical interludes between chapters fit well with the eerie nature of the story.

It's a very exciting book to read as per my 10 year old. She highly recommends this book and it sequel, "Playing with Fire". She has read it cover to cover twice and is working on her third time. So that tells you it is an interesting read.

I was looking to get some books for my son who loves to read Harry Potter. There are tons of series out there that have similar themes, but this one caught my eye as something different. My son rolled his eyes at me when I gave it to him, but now he's tearing through the book and says he really likes it! He did tell me that "this really isn't for anyone younger than 3rd grade because it has kidnapping and guns in it." As soon as he's done with it, I think I'll have to check it out too!
