...since life with the Emerson clan has never been peaceful. Still the Great War is over and as this, the 15th AMELIA PEABODY novel, opens the family is in residence in Egypt. The group has grown in the two years since the close of events of THE GOLDEN ONE. The baby that Nefret and Ramses were expecting turned out to be twins, a boy, Davy and a girl, Charla who seem to have gotten Ramses' talents for getting into mischief but, so far at least, not his language skills. Sienna, now ten (and almost grownup, in her opinion at least) her devoted followers, Horus and Gargery round out the group who will accompany Amelia and Emerson as they begin the 1920 season.
Once again though Emerson is not to have a peaceful year of uninterrupted work, as the family waits in Cairo for the arrival for the rest of the family Ramses is kidnapped by a mysterious woman, one who is dressed as the ancient Egyptian goddess, Hathor. Ramses manages to escape unharmed, but the incident proves to be the very first of many odd happenings, events that effect every member of the family and friends, even leading to the inevitable dead bodies that seem to appear each year.
This is a long running series, one that began with the 1884-85 adventures, (and courtships) of Amelia and Emerson as well as Evelyn and Walter. Those who are unfamiliar with this series, which for the last few novels has been billed as suspense rather than mystery, could begin with this one since Peters has managed to work in a synopsis of the main events fairly early in book although the more of the earlier novels the reader has read, the more they will enjoy this one. Fans of the series will not want to miss meeting Ramses' and Nefret's offspring and seeing how the family in general is doing. Of particular interest is the long awaited revelation of Sethos' real name.
As always with this series the mystery/suspense aspect takes a definite backseat to the ongoing family stories that are once again told from Amelia's own, highly opinionated, point of view supplemented by Ramses and Nefret.

This book combines 3 of my favorite things: a quick moving story with engaging, believeable characters, a good mystery, and Ancient Egypt.
I love mysteries, especially British authors. As an American, some of the British slang in this book is a little hard to follow at times. But that doesn't detract from the story at all. Elizabeth has written a thoroughly enjoyable book with engaging characters. There are characters that you love and ones you love to hate. It is easy to forget that this book is fiction. This is one of those books you still stay up until 2 am reading because there is really no good place to quit. You will keep teling yourself "just one more chapter".
For fans of this type of mystery, I also highly recommend the works of Dorothy L. Sayers and the more well-known Agatha Christie.

In this book we are treated to another generation of Emerson, and even though they are all under six, they do add to the story, and give us all something to look forward to in upcoming books. I also recommend that this book should be read in order. So many of the things that happen in each book are dependent on things that happened in previous books. This is another great adventure that is set in Amelia's beautiful Luxor. Even though The Great War is over, it doesn't mean that the Emersons are in less danger. Danger always seems to find them in the guise of tomb robbers, murderers and other nefarious characters. I won't say anymore. You will need to read this wonderful series for yourself, but be prepared for an exciting journey when you very first begin your journey with the beloved Emersons.

Elizabeth Peters has done it again. Her Mrs. Amelia P. Emerson is the heroine that comes as a fresh wind in the violent profession of sleuths in litterature today.
