Product Description:
Alexandra (Barney) Barnaby roars onto the Miami Beach scene in hot pursuit of her missing baby brother, 'Wild' Bill. Leave it to the maverick of the family to get Barney involved with high-speed car chases, a search for sunken treasure, and Sam Hooker, a NASCAR driver who’s good at revving a woman's engine.
Engaged in a deadly race, Bill has 'borrowed' Hooker's sixty-five-foot Hatteras and sailed off into the sunset...just when Hooker has plans for the boat. Hooker figures he'll attach himself to Barney and maybe run into scumbag Bill. And better yet, maybe he'll get lucky in love with Bill's sweetie pie sister.
The pedal will have to go to metal if Barney and Hooker want to be the very first to cross the finish line, save Bill, Hooker's boat...and maybe the world.

The trouble starts when Alexandra Barnaby, aka Barney, gets a phone call from her brother in Florida saying he's going to be out of touch for a while, that's abruptly cut off after a woman's scream. So naturally, she takes off for Florida to rescue him.
Once she gets there, she runs into NASCAR driver Sam Hooker, aka NASCAR Guy, whose boat is missing, presumably taken by Barney's brother.
They join forces to find the brother and the boat, NASCAR Guy flirting outrageously with Barney all the way. We run into the usual sidekicks, a shipwreck with missing gold, and a bit of international intrigue and danger.
There are some laughs, as you'd expect from Evanovich, but quite a lot of the book is dated or doesn't quite ring true, from the Cuban Missile Crisis-related plot to the name of NASCAR Guy's boat, The Happy Hooker, to Barney's improbable wardrobe.
When Metro Girl very first came out, there was a lot of buzz about it, and the thing I remember most is that people were really irritated over the constant repetition of "NASCAR Guy." At the time, I was skeptical, and thought that was a really petty complaint, but I have to say, I see what they meant.

This was my very first Evanovich book & I have to say that I really liked it. The book is in very first person, which I really enjoy, & I found Alex (Barney) to be really funny. I enjoyed her quite a bit. Her & Hooker (NASCAR Guy) gave me many laughs. I thought the storyline was great & although there wasn't much mystery it kept me glued. I couldn't put the book down. The only real thing that bugged me was that while they were doing some investigating at the beginning of the story I didn't understand why they didn't ask some more questions of the people they were "interviewing". For instance why didn't they show Barbie the picture of Bill and ask if she happened to see him at the club that night. And, why did "puke face" suddenly become "pukey" for like 3 pages & then return to "puke face". I mean you've already given the guy a nickname so are you now going to give his nickname a nickname? Anyway, that was just something small. I really enjoyed this book. This is the very first in a 2 book series & I can't wait to read Motor Mouth. I highly recommend this book.

First of all in no way did i see anything similar between Alex and Stephanie Plum. I think it was a descent story with fun characters. I have to say that i currently am reading Motor Mouth and, i think the sequel is better. Will there be another?

This is the very first and last book I will read by this author. It's what I call a "dialogue" book. Shockingly bad writing, comprised mostly of character dialogue, interspersed with what the characters wear and what they eat (along the lines of, she ate a turkey sandwich, then decided she really wanted a cookie, too, so she went back to get one and then ate it).
If you have an IQ over 50, the plot elements will do nothing more than make you angry. Just a few of many examples: 1. bad guys are after the lead characters. Lead characters drive around Miami in an easily-recognizable mini-cooper and are spotted several times by the bad guys. Lead characters are too dumb to rent a car; 2. good guys are kidnapped. Lead characters do not call the police, even though they know where their friends are being held captive, because of "bureaucratic blue tape". Lead characters hatch a plan to rescue good guys, who get raped and tortured in the meantime; 3. Millions of dollars in gold belonging to Cuba are recovered, but Cuban government (apparently awash in capital) is willing to offer a choice: either give us the gold or give us the bad guy; 4. Lead characters don't trust shady double agents, but give them the address where a bomb is hidden.
I was really hoping the lead characters would die early on, but that would be much too creative for a such a banal (look it up, Janet) piece of schlock. Please don't waste your time.

Janet Evanovich never fails in keeping you turning the pages. Her one liners are hard to beat. This series is delightful, and I'm disappointed that there have been only 2 books in the Barnaby series. Yeah, the story is somewhat farfetched, but it is always entertaining. I love the way she builds on one, tiny little disaster and lets it balloon. Keep up the good work, Ms. Evanovich!
