Product Description:

Two armed men enter the police station in tiny Heartsdale, Georgia, and open fire. When the shooting stops, an officer is dead, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver is seriously wounded, and the survivors -- including a class of grade-school children and medical examiner Sara Linton -- are held hostage. In a tense standoff that could erupt at any moment into more bloodletting -- with her ex-husband on the threshold of death -- Sara must search for answers and an escape in the memories of a time at the start of their relationship when another brutal, shocking crime shattered their small-town world. Because the sins of the past have caught up with Sara and Jeffrey ... with a vengeance.

Amazon.com Review:
Medical examiner Sara Linton and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver make their fourth appearance in this riveting new back-and-forth thriller that grounds a brutal attack by two young men on the Grant County, Georgia police department in a twelve-year-old Alabama murder case that occurred while Sara and Jeffrey were just beginning their tumultuous romance. En route to a beach vacation shortly after they meet, the couple takes a detour to the small town where Jeffrey grew up and began his law enforcement career. But their carefree holiday is interrupted when his best friend from childhood, a fellow cop, is charged with murder after killing a man who broke into his house. Despite his subsequent confession, Jeffrey believes there’s more to the story than Robert is telling him, and when the skeleton of a young woman with whom both Robert and Tolliver were once involved is discovered in a secret cave only they knew about, and Robert admits to her murder too, Tolliver must again confront a past he thought he had long since put behind him.

Slaughter unravels a convoluted story deftly and smoothly as the action moves between those long-ago events and the siege of the police station by two young men who are determined to make Jeffrey pay for a crime they believe he committed. Threatening to kill whoever stands between them and their target--including eight children on a school field trip at the station house when the bloody siege begins--they execute a deputy they mistakenly believe is Tolliver. Skillfully blending past and present events and illuminating the equally convoluted relationship between Sara and Jeffrey (who have married and divorced in the intervening years) without interrupting the breathtaking pace of the action or dropping a beat, Slaughter takes this series to a new level of excellence. --Jane Adams

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Maybe you have to have read the previous books...
Pediatrician Sara Linton pays a visit to her ex-husband, the police chief, the same day two violent young men decide to storm the police station and gun down the occupants.

Now that is bad luck.

Author Karin Slaughter mixes this action with flashbacks from a previous age, when Sara Linton was being courted by Chief Jeffrey Tolliver. During this bizarre courtship, there is a murder, another decade old murder revealed, lies, anger, drunkenness, less than passionate sex, and more. Yet Sara stands by her man!

This weaving of past and present just did not work, even though there was a strained connection between past and present.

I had no understanding, at all, about how these two people found anything in common. And that was my primary problem with this story. Some majority of any plot has to make sense. This one didn't.

I'm not looking forward to any other book in this series, and with these characters.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - More thrills and chills!
In Slaughter's third book of her crime series about Dr. Sara Linton and Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver, she delves into Jeffrey's childhood and the early years of his relationship with Sara. She was smart to leave clues in her previous novels that add to the tension of this one: her faithful readers will appreciate having this insight.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Decent read...implausible story
This is my second book by Ms. Slaughter and for the most part I was entertained, but there is definitely a point in the book when I started frowning at the seemingly endless parade of coincidences. Splitting the two stories as very first seemed like an interesting choice for the writer until you start forgetting about one or the other. Then what started off as an explosive opening soon becomes a watered down joke. Exactly what was Eric and Sonny's plan? And why go through all that if they knew Jeffrey from Matt? It just didn't make sense. Lena has been downgraded to a joke of cop and the 3:32 deadline turned out to be as anti-climatic as they come. I'm not completely turned off my Slaughter's series but there are signs of her being a one trick pony. I've never seen so many rape and abused characters in one series before. I'll read her again, but she's gonna have to step it up.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great series addition
This was my favorite of the Grant County books so far. We got to know the characters history a little more, which was fun. And two mysteries are always better than one!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Grant Co Series is a wonderful series
You can't miss with Karin Slaughter. This Grant Co Series is really a good series. I do recommend reading the books that preceed this one. But, I loved the books. I love all the Grant Co books.
