Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:

Caterer Goldy Schulz's lucrative new gig, preparing breakfasts and conference room snacks for a local law firm, is time-consuming, but she's enjoying it . . . until the night she arrives to find Dusty, the firm's paralegal, dead. The deceased also happened to be Goldy's friend and neighbor, and now Dusty's grieving mother is begging Goldy to find out who murdered her daughter.

Just because the police are on the case doesn't mean Goldy can't do a little snooping herself. While catering a party at the home of one of the firm's lawyers, she just happens to overhear an incriminating conversation. She also discovers a few tasty clues in the kitchen. Before long, Goldy finds herself knee-deep in suspects. But one of them is incredibly dangerous . . . and very liable to cook Goldy's goose.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - The cooking is the clue
Goldy Schultz starts off this book by falling over a body and is then drafted by the victim's mother to solve the mystery of who killed her daughter. Along the way we find out that Goldy knew this girl for a few years and was actually friendly with her in this past year - so Goldy has to get over her own grief while trying to figure out what happened.

Goldy's catering career is actually what put her in the midst of this one as she caters for a successful law firm. Dusty (the friend) is a paralegal at the firm and is also learning to cook by observing Goldy. After the death is dealt with, Goldy struggles to keep her catering practice going, as well as solve the problem of the murder as she is too involved in grief and in the various affairs of the law office. Turns out that there is a lot going on in that office and many of the upstanding pillars of the community, are actually something quite different.

A major part of this series is the descriptions of the various dishes that Goldy makes and this one does not disappoint in that regard. For convenience, all the recipes provided are grouped in the back of the book which some might find distracting, but I liked. There is also a unique twist here where a local artist is also a cook and he paints his dishes and includes the recipes on the painting. This is actually an area (the cooking) where the very first clues to what is going on arise.

As we follow along with the story, a picture of what might have transpired and what lead to it starts emerging. Midway through the book I was convinced that I knew who did the deed and why. Diane Mott Davidson does a great job of leading the reader along and I only found out that I was almost totally off base in the last couple of chapters. Of course, I am being a bit harsh on myself, there is a delicious twist at the end that I simply did not foresee. Some of the characters that I believed to have been involved, are indeed - but who the real murderer is, and why they did it, was something I totally missed.

I enjoyed the book and the twisted ending and cannot wait to visit again with Goldy and her family and friends in the subsequent edition.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - C is for catering and crime
A murdered paralegal assistant. A recently deceased artist who painted highly sought after images of food. A team of ambitious attorneys, and their competitive wives. A harridan of an office manager. A bishop with a dark secret. Throw them into the mix with Goldy's family and friends, and you've got the recipe for her subsequent culinary caper. Dark Tort is a puzzle of a mystery chock full of colorful characters, plot twists, and even a few LOL scenes (especially the one at the birthday party with all the leaves.) It's amazing to believe Davidson's written so many of these and is still managing to remain fresh and enjoyable. But she's done it, so you can pick this one up for when you're in the mood for something light but satisfying.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Words on Dark Tort
I am currently reading this book and I am, as always, enjoying the characters Ms. Davidson has created and utilizes in this mystery. I like their down to earth values and how they care about each other. I have a ways to go to the end but it has been an enjoyable experience thus far.

Dark Tort

As usual, oustanding. Goldy does it again. Another dead body, another mystery to solved. Who did it? I love how she gets involved and I love how it is all centered around food and kept clean and fun. Since I am from Colorado, it is easy for me to picture and her descriptions are outstanding! Your mouth waters the WHOLE time and your stomach will grumble wishing you were there tasting every dish!

The mystery had me the whole time, one minute thinking it was Louise, the subsequent maybe it was Vic. Who knew? I sure didn't!! I really hate knowing within the very first 45 pages. Def a novel of suspense, but fun suspense. I love the relationship between Goldy and her husband Tom as well. I remember when it was between her and the Jerk. These books just keep gettitng better and better! Can't ask for more. Can't wait to try the recipes too. Thanks Ms Davidson!

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Did Diane Mott Davidson actually write this book?
I've read all of the books in the Goldy series, and I seriously have to wonder if someone other than DMD wrote this book. The writing style doesn't match the other novels: the sentence structure is short and choppy, the dialogue is stilted, and the punctuation is ridiculous. I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned the overuse of exclamation points. In my opinion, there are also too many question marks. But most disappointingly, the characters (especially Goldy!) don't ring true. They actually seem to be caricatures of their former selves. Very, very disappointing.
