Product Description:
Rochelle Baxter was an artist recently arrived from Washington State, cruelly cut down in the early stages of a promising career. Now all that remains of her lies on a cold slab in the Cochise County morgue, and Sheriff Joanna Brady knows that murder has once again infected her small desert community. But there is more to this homicide than initially meets the eye-- the victim died while under government protection.
Instructed to swallow her indignation, Joanna awaits the arrival of the newest member of the state's Special Homicide Investigation team, a man named J. P. Beaumont. Sheriff Brady resents his intrusion and cannot help but make her feelings known.
But the road they are forced to travel together takes some unexpected turns, running them headfirst into the impenetrable stone walls of a conspiracy of silence. Brady and Beaumont's hunt is disturbing a very deadly nest of rattlers, and suddenly trust is the only option they have.

If you're a JP Beaumont fan (I'm not), you'll find this too touchy-feely for you. If you're a Joanna Brady fan (I am), you will be clamoring to smack Joanna upside the head at the end for flirting with JP (and disaster). Left a bad taste in my mouth.
The description of Bisbee is spot-on; visiting the town after reading this book, I knew my way around its Old Town area.

PARADISE LOST units J.A. Jance's J.P. Beaumount and Joanna Brady under one cover, which may or may not work depending your involvement with either characters.
An artist is hanging her works for her very first ever one-woman showing when she is brutally murdered. The classic theme of nothing is ever what it is on the surface reveals the victim was in the witness protection program that didn't work. Sheriff Brady has her staff deep in the investigation and as added support the Washington state's attorney general sends a special investigator, J.P. Beaumount. The sparks fly with expected results.
J.A. Jance manages to deliver some clever character development through the eyes of a second character with the departure to a two-person point of view. A good read that is both mystery and thriller.

What sparked my interest was bringing two of her main series characters together; Joanna Brady & JP Beaumont. Of these two, JP is clearly the stronger series. Unfortunately, his strong character can't save this book. Joanna Brady needs to retire. Her character is weak in the Brady novels & this is no exception. There is just such needless story telling involving the family dog & Joanna's mother. The character just does not have any real substance in most any of the Brady books. Pages of text are used to no real purpose regarding the tale at hand, I keep wondering why Jance keeps going to these secondary characters. What became interesting toward the end was the sexual tension between Brady & JP. That tension could have been built on. Instead, it was over in a flash. The setting in Arizona for the Brady novels is very good. It's shame the character can't fill the setting. Even with JP, Jance goes off on tangents with secondary characters which never come to fruition; as in JP's present girlfriend

As always Jance writes fluidly and enticingly, with engaging characters, and some very evocative descriptions of landscapes. Unfortunately, this book is marked by three weaknesses. First, the technique of combining two points of view, corresponding to two different protagonists, is a tricky one and Jance does not avoid the danger of repetition which does not advance the story, Second, the immediate villain's skill in handling a highly toxic substance is implausible, as is both his recruitment to commit the crime and his actions. This is made worse by the very shaowy nature of the movers behind the crime. Finally, the romantic element developed does not correspond at all well to the poersonalities and values of the characters as developed. My recommendation is that one is better to try one of Jance's other books -- though if you are hooked already, you will probably want to try this one anyway.

I am a new J.A. Jance fan, and am thoroughly enjoying the Joanna Brady series. So far this is one of my favorites. She does a good job of depicting a strong woman battling career and family, and just plain being a woman. Her "who done it" mysteries have good plot developments.
